‘Shabad – Reet Aur Riwaaz’ to premiere on ZEE5 on Feb 6

The trailer of ZEE5 Original series ‘Shabad – Reet Aur Riwaaz’ was unveiled on Wednesday, offering a poignant glimpse into a coming-of-age story rooted in tradition, faith and personal aspiration. Directed by Ameet Guptha, the series stars Mihir Ahuja and Suvinder Vicky in lead roles and is set against the evocative cultural landscape of Punjab.

As stated in a press note, ‘Shabad’ follows the journey of Ghuppi Singh, a 16-year-old boy living with a chronic stammer, whose dreams stand in sharp contrast to his family’s deeply ingrained legacy. His father, Harminder Singh, is a respected Ragi singer who balances devotional music with a corporate career and expects his son to carry forward the sacred tradition. However, Ghuppi finds his sense of freedom and self-expression not in hymns, but on the football field, setting the stage for a quiet yet powerful conflict between inheritance and individuality.

As generational tensions rise, the series delves into emotional fault lines within the family, exploring how love, expectation and unspoken fears shape relationships. The narrative sensitively examines the pull between legacy and aspiration, capturing moments that resonate across many Indian households.

Speaking about his role, Mihir Ahuja described Ghuppi as one of the most vulnerable and honest characters he has portrayed. He said the stammer is not merely a speech condition, but a reflection of everything Ghuppi struggles to express — fear, ambition, desire and the need to be accepted. According to Ahuja, Shabad captures that pivotal phase in a young person’s life when one is torn between being a “good child” and staying true to oneself.

Suvinder Vicky, who essays the role of Harminder Singh, said his character is shaped by faith, discipline and a fear of losing legacy. He noted that Harminder genuinely believes he is doing what is best for his son, even when that love manifests as pressure. What drew him to the project, Vicky added, was the fact that Shabad does not villainise parents, but instead reflects how unspoken emotions and unrealised dreams influence actions within families.

Director Ameet Guptha said ‘Shabad’ is ultimately a story about listening — to children, to parents, and to the silence that often exists between them. He explained that the series explores how love intertwined with expectation can turn into pressure, and how empathy can heal what authority cannot.

‘Shabad – Reet Aur Riwaaz’ is set to premiere on ZEE5 on Feb 6.
