Lionsgate has confirmed that it is moving ahead with a sequel to its 2015 supernatural action film ‘The Last Witch Hunter’. Hollywood star Vin Diesel will reprise his role as Kaulder, the immortal witch hunter, while veteran actor Michael Caine is also expected to return as Dolan, though formal agreements are still under negotiation.
According to a UNI report, the project is being co-developed with Diesel’s production company, One Race Films, and is being positioned for an expedited production timeline. The studio is looking to build on the global cult following the film has gathered since its release.
The original film, which followed Kaulder’s centuries-long battle against powerful witch covens, grossed $130 million worldwide and went on to perform strongly across ancillary markets. Nearly a decade later, it continues to hold relevance, ranking among the five most viewed titles on Netflix.
Lionsgate believes that advancements in filmmaking technology will allow the sequel to be mounted more ambitiously while keeping production costs efficient.
Adam Fogelson, Chair of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, said, “‘The Last Witch Hunter’ has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favourite, with audiences continuing to discover and re-watch it across every platform over the past decade. That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world. Vin and I have partnered many times over the years, and he is a true force in our industry.
“I’m thrilled to be reuniting with him as he returns to this iconic role and excited by how advancements in filmmaking technology now allow us to economically deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale.”
While the supporting cast and creative team have yet to be officially announced, industry watchers expect the sequel to retain the mix of dark fantasy and high-octane action that made the original a lasting favourite among genre fans.
