May box office collection soars to Rs.1,136 Cr, second-highest month of 2025

The Indian box office saw another major surge in May 2025, with total domestic collections reaching Rs.1,136 crore, making it the second-best month of the year after February. This growth reflects the audience’s renewed enthusiasm for theatrical releases and a strong lineup of both Indian and international titles.

According to the latest Ormax report, the May total includes projected collections of ongoing releases still running in theatres. The cumulative domestic gross for January to May now stands at Rs.4,812 crore — a substantial 27 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The report also highlights the positive impact of Hollywood releases on Indian box office performance, which has seen a resurgence not witnessed since the Oppenheimer-Barbie wave of July 2023.

Ajay Devgn-starrer Raid 2 emerged as the biggest title of the month, grossing over Rs.200 crore and becoming the second-highest-grossing Hindi film of the year, just behind Chhaava. Another major draw was ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’, which grossed over Rs.115 crore, strengthening the month’s performance with a notable international presence.

Overall, Hollywood films collected Rs.262 crore in May, driven not just by Mission: Impossible but also by ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ and ‘Thunderbolts, placing three English-language films among the top ten for the month. This strong showing lifted Hollywood’s share of the box office from 4 percent in April to 8 percent in May, bringing it back in line with the same period in 2024.

The top-grossing films of May reflect a growing diversity in India’s theatrical landscape, with representation across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hollywood titles. The cumulative performance of Indian films continues to dominate, but Hollywood’s resurgence has added a fresh dynamic to box office trends.

These figures are measured using Gross Box Office collections, which combine revenue across all languages in the case of multi-language releases. For ongoing titles, estimates are included based on current trends and may be adjusted in next month’s final tally. Films are attributed to the month of their release, even if they earn significant revenue in the following weeks.

As the industry approaches the second half of the year, the May numbers add momentum to what is shaping up to be a record-breaking year for the Indian box office.
