Acclaimed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin is working on a follow-up to his Oscar-winning film ‘The Social Network’, which chronicled the rise of Facebook and the legal entanglements of its billionaire founder Mark Zuckerberg. The new project, currently titled ‘The Social Network Part II’, will once again take a closer look at the tech empire that transformed global communication and politics.
According to a report by PTI, the sequel is being developed at Sony Pictures, the same studio that backed the original 2010 film directed by David Fincher. While Fincher’s involvement in the new chapter is yet to be confirmed, Sorkin is back in the writer’s chair, aiming to chart the complex journey of Facebook in the years following its dramatic rise.
The original film, based on Ben Mezrich’s book ‘The Accidental Billionaires’, focused on the origins of Facebook from a Harvard dorm room, and the subsequent fallout between Zuckerberg and his co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Sorkin won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the movie, which also earned praise for its sharp writing, direction, and a haunting score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
While plot details for ‘The Social Network Part II’ remain under wraps, it is expected that the sequel will delve into more recent developments surrounding Facebook, including the platform’s involvement in global politics, privacy controversies, disinformation campaigns, and its rebranding to Meta. The sequel is likely to explore how Zuckerberg’s influence has evolved—and expanded—well beyond the college-campus narrative seen in the original.
