Amazon cancels ballet drama ‘Étoile’ after S1

In a surprising turn for fans of classical dance dramas, Amazon’s Prime Video has officially pulled the plug on ‘Étoile’ after just one season, despite initially committing to a two-season straight-to-series order.

According to UNI, this comes as a blow to followers of the richly choreographed show that explored the elite world of ballet through the lens of two embattled companies based in New York and Paris. Starring ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ alum Luke Kirby alongside French icon Charlotte Gainsbourg, ‘Étoile’ painted an ambitious, international picture of the struggles and triumphs of artistic institutions on the brink of transformation.

The storyline followed the two artistic directors, played by Kirby and Gainsbourg, who orchestrate a daring exchange of their lead dancers to breathe new life into their companies. The show’s richly layered narrative, however, failed to translate into strong viewership. According to Deadline, the series didn’t manage to enter Nielsen’s top streaming charts during its initial release weeks, raising questions about its ability to sustain a long-term audience.

While Amazon had committed to two seasons back in 2023, the deal included strategic clauses that allowed the streamer to walk away after the first season if metrics didn’t align. The decision to cancel ‘Étoile’ is understood to be unrelated to the recent regime change at Amazon MGM Studios. The show was originally greenlit under former studio head Jennifer Salke, who stepped down in March 2025.

A lavish production with a reportedly high budget, ‘Étoile’ boasted a talented ensemble that included Gideon Glick, Lou de Laâge (in her English-speaking debut), David Alvarez, Ivan du Pontavice, Taïs Vinolo, David Haig, LaMay Zhang, and Simon Callow. Guest appearances by Gilmore Girls’ Yanic Truesdale and Kelly Bishop added nostalgic value for long-time TV fans.

The series was executive produced by ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, along with Dhana Rivera Gilbert. Co-executive production duties were handled by veteran director Scott Ellis. Despite the creative force behind it and the cultural richness of its narrative, ‘Étoile’ could not dance past its first act.
