Netflix has announced that it will cease to support its streaming service on the second and third-generation Apple TVs, effective after July 31, 2024.
According to The Economic Times, these models, which were released over a decade ago, lack access to Apple’s App Store, prompting Netflix to discontinue its service to maintain the best possible user experience.
In an email to customers, Netflix explained that the change is part of its efforts to ensure optimal performance and support. The company has also updated its support page to reflect this change. “Netflix will no longer be available on Apple TV (2nd generation) and Apple TV (3rd generation) after July 31, 2024,” the page states.
Apple has already classified the first three generations of Apple TVs as “obsolete,” meaning they no longer receive service from Apple seven years after their discontinuation. This move follows Netflix’s previous cessation of support for other older devices, including certain Samsung and Vizio smart TVs and the first-generation Roku boxes in 2019.
Netflix has also decided against developing a native app for the Apple Vision Pro headset.
