Instagram’s subsidiary app, Threads, has witnessed a striking decline in its daily active users on Android devices, while Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) continues to gain momentum, recent data reveals.
According to IANS, the Threads Android app reached its peak of 49.3 million daily active users worldwide on July 7, only to plummet to 10.3 million by August 7.
Initially met with enthusiasm upon its launch, Threads quickly garnered interest among Instagram users, capitalizing on its text-based social approach. However, the initial buzz was short-lived, as the app struggled to sustain user engagement over time.
In stark contrast, X (formerly Twitter) boasts a robust user base of over 100 million daily active users solely on Android, with users spending approximately 25 minutes per day on the platform. Conversely, Threads faced a sharp decline in active user time, dropping from an average of 14 minutes worldwide (nearly 21 minutes in the US) on July 7 to a mere 3 minutes by August 7.
While Threads initially captured attention, it failed to retain users in the same manner as X. Critics argue that Threads lacks the compelling content and discussions that keep X users engaged, including conversations and comments on various subjects, often including critiques of X’s owner, Elon Musk. The data underscores the challenges Threads confronts in establishing a strong foothold in the competitive social media landscape.
For Threads to overcome its decline, innovation and feature enhancement are crucial in enticing users to stay active on the app. As the competition between these platforms intensifies, it is likely to spur further developments and enhancements in the realm of social media. The contrasting trajectories of Threads and X reflect the evolving preferences of users and the dynamic nature of the digital world.
