The ‘Toy Story’ franchise has generated more than $50 billion in economic impact worldwide over the past three decades, with $4 of every $5 flowing into the broader economy, according to a study by independent research firm Steward Redqueen.
The study, released in June ahead of the theatrical release of ‘Toy Story 5’, found that the franchise has driven $25 billion in economic impact across all 50 US states, a Disney statement has said.
California, Florida, Utah, Arizona and Nevada are the states where it supports the largest share of state GDP.
Since 1995, the ‘Toy Story’ films have earned more than $4 billion at the global box office. Before ‘Toy Story 5’ reached theatres in June, fans had streamed more than two billion hours of ‘Toy Story’ content on Disney+, making it the service’s most-watched film franchise.

‘Toy Story 5’ started streaming on Disney+ from last week. Most Disney+ content is available in India on JioHotstar, the streaming platform that’s co-owned by Reliance Industries-Disney joint venture JioStar.
The first four ‘Toy Story’ films also generated more than 60 million hours of viewing on Disney+ ahead of the fifth film’s release, the biggest lift recorded for an upcoming theatrical release.
The franchise has also expanded across Disney parks worldwide, with Andy and Bonnie’s toys featured in four fully immersive lands, 23 attractions and two hotels. Its presence extends to entertainment, dining, character experiences and Disney Cruise Line.
In a statement late last week, Disney said the franchise’s economic impact has been sustained by its ability to grow with successive generations.
Millennials who saw the original film in 1995 are now introducing it to their children, while Gen Z grew up with ‘Toy Story 2’ and ‘Toy Story 3’, and Gen Alpha encountered Woody and Buzz with ‘Toy Story 4’.
Millennials have driven the greatest impact, first through films and later through experiences and consumer products.
