The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has constituted a high-level committee under Prasar Bharati Chairman Prasoon Joshi to recommend measures for strengthening India’s film sector, with a focus on making the industry more competitive, future-ready and globally positioned.

The committee, according to an official statement from the government late last evening, has been tasked with examining key issues affecting the film ecosystem and suggesting policy interventions to boost growth, enhance ease of doing business and promote India’s creative economy.

The panel will engage with stakeholders from across the film industry before submitting its recommendations to the government in three months time.

According to the Ministry, the committee will study ways to improve the overall film production ecosystem, strengthen institutional support for filmmakers, encourage investment and innovation, and recommend measures that can help Indian cinema expand its domestic and international footprint.

It will also examine avenues to leverage emerging technologies and evolving audience preferences while preserving India’s rich cinematic heritage.

The panel will comprise representatives from different segments of the film industry, including filmmakers, producers, writers, technicians, exhibitors and other experts, enabling a broad-based consultation process before recommendations are finalised, the Ministry said.

Joshi, an acclaimed lyricist, screenwriter and communications professional who currently heads Prasar Bharati, will lead the exercise. The government said the committee’s recommendations are expected to contribute to policy measures aimed at enhancing the global competitiveness of the Indian film industry and creating a more robust ecosystem for content creation.

The move comes as the government steps up efforts to position India’s media and entertainment sector as a key pillar of the country’s creative economy.

The committee is expected to consult a wide range of stakeholders and submit recommendations on measures to support sustainable growth, improve industry practices and strengthen India’s standing as a global filmmaking destination.
