ZEE5 is set to premiere its latest Marathi offering, ‘Dashavatar’, a mythological drama starring Mahesh Manjrekar and Dilip Prabhavalkar, on November 14.
Directed by Subodh Khanolkar and produced by Ocean Film Company and Ocean Art House, the film promises to be a spiritual and visual journey that blends mythology, faith, and human emotion.
Set in Maharashtra’s Konkan region, Dashavatar follows Babuli Mestri (played by Dilip Prabhavalkar), a veteran Dashavatari performer who has dedicated his life to preserving the sacred folk theatre tradition. Despite his failing eyesight, Babuli’s devotion to his art remains unshaken. During one final Mahashivratri performance, the lines between myth and reality blur as Babuli seemingly embodies the fierce Rudra avatar — setting off a deeply emotional and spiritual journey exploring faith, duty, and destiny.
Speaking about the film, director Subodh Khanolkar said, “Dashavatar is not just a story for me — it’s a cherished corner of my childhood memories. Growing up in Konkan, I witnessed Dashavatari performances, the beauty of nature, and the vibrant local culture. I’ve tried to capture all of that essence in this film.” He added that the film celebrates India’s artistic diversity, connecting nature, traditions, and folk art in a single narrative that he hopes will resonate with audiences across the world.
Dilip Prabhavalkar, reflecting on his role, shared, “Portraying Babuli Mestri was one of the most profound experiences of my career — a role that demanded not just performance, but surrender. Under Subodh Khanolkar’s sensitive direction, every moment felt alive with emotion and purpose.”
The ensemble cast also includes Bharat Jadhav, Abhinay Berde, Priyadarshini Indalkar, Siddharth Menon, Aarti Wadagbalkar, Ravi Kale, and Vijay Kenkre in pivotal roles.
Commenting on the film, V.R. Hema, Chief Channel Officer – Zee Marathi and Business Head – Marathi ZEE5, said, “Dashavatar is a milestone for Marathi cinema — a visual spectacle and emotionally profound experience that explores the intersection of mythology and today’s real issues with depth and artistry. With Dilip sir’s powerful portrayal and Subodh Khanolkar’s masterful direction, this film is a divine journey our audiences will cherish.”
‘Dashavatar’ will stream exclusively on ZEE5 from November 14, bringing to life an extraordinary tale that celebrates devotion, tradition, and the timeless magic of Indian folk theatre.
