ZEE5 has announced its upcoming original web series ‘Shabad- Reet Aur Riwaaz’, a poignant family drama that explores faith, legacy and personal aspiration against the cultural backdrop of Punjab.
The series stars Suvinder Vicky and Mihir Ahuja in the lead as a father-son duo, with Mahi Raj and Taranjit Kaur playing key supporting roles as the sister and mother. Produced by Rusk Media, the six-episode series is directed by Ameet Guptha, known for ZEE5 Global’s critically acclaimed Bakaiti.
‘Shabad- Reet Aur Riwaaz’ is rooted in a close-knit Punjabi household bound by tradition, belief and inherited expectations. The narrative centres on Ghuppi, a stuttering teenager with a deep passion for football, whose dreams sharply contrast with those of his father, a respected Ragi singer determined that his son should carry forward the family’s sacred musical legacy.
The series delves into the emotional fault lines between generations, capturing a father’s devotion to tradition and a son’s yearning for self-expression. Beyond this central conflict, the story also explores themes of identity, fear and courage, as Ghuppi navigates the pressure of inheritance while coping with the vulnerability of his stammer. His journey to find his own voice—both literally and emotionally — unfolds in a world shaped by sacred sound, spiritual discipline and deeply held belief systems.
Commenting on the show, Kaveri Das, Chief Channel Officer of &TV and Business Head-Hindi, ZEE5, said the series reflects the platform’s evolving approach to Hindi originals. She noted that ‘Shabad-Reet Aur Riwaaz’ aligns with ZEE5’s focus on rooted, slice-of-life family dramas that are emotionally authentic and widely relatable, examining how traditional family values intersect with a younger generation’s desire to choose its own path.
Producer Mayank Yadav of Rusk Media added that the story was conceived to feel lived-in and honest, using the world of Ragi singing and the pressures of legacy as a metaphor for many contemporary families. He said the collaboration with ZEE5 Global allowed the team to tell a story.
