Meta-owned messaging giant WhatsApp disclosed that it banned a record-breaking number of over 69 lakh ‘bad accounts’ in India during December 2023, in adherence to the new IT Rules 2021.

According to IANS, out of the total bans between December 1-31, around 1,658,000 accounts were proactively banned before any user reports were received, as stated in its monthly compliance report.

WhatsApp, with over 500 million users in India, received a record 16,366 complaint reports in December, taking action on 13 of them. ‘Accounts Actioned’ refers to reports where remedial action was taken by either banning an account or restoring a previously banned one based on the report.

The user-safety report provides insights into user complaints received, actions taken by WhatsApp, and the platform’s preventive measures against abuse. To further empower social media users in India, the Centre introduced the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC), addressing concerns related to content and other issues.

WhatsApp emphasized its commitment to preventing and combating abuse, stating, “We are an industry leader among end-to-end encrypted messaging services. In addition to our safety features and controls, we employ a team of experts in law enforcement, online safety, and technology developments to oversee these efforts.”

In November, WhatsApp had banned more than 71 lakh bad accounts in the country, showcasing its ongoing efforts to maintain a secure and user-friendly platform.
