Filmmaker and producer Tariq Khan has once again brought Indian storytelling to the international stage with the world premiere of his latest feature film ‘Bombay Story’ at the Cannes Film Festival. Featuring actress Mouni Roy in a prominent role, the film received an enthusiastic response from audiences and critics during its screening at the prestigious global event.

According to an official press release, Bombay Story is inspired by the powerful literary works of legendary Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto. The film explores themes of human emotion, social complexity, and the many layers of life in Mumbai, blending realism with emotionally driven storytelling that reflects Manto’s timeless narrative style.

The screening reportedly drew a packed audience at Cannes, with viewers appreciating the film’s raw storytelling, atmospheric treatment, and performances. The film features an ensemble cast including Mouni Roy, Anupria Goenka, Rahat Shah, Kasmi, and Shoaib Nikash Shah, among others.

Speaking about the film’s reception, Tariq Khan said Manto’s stories continue to resonate because of their honesty and emotional depth. “Manto’s stories are timeless because they speak the truth of human existence without filters. Bombay Story is our humble attempt to carry forward that legacy and present it to the world through the language of cinema,” he said.

Known for backing meaningful and socially rooted cinema, Tariq Khan has steadily built a reputation in the international festival circuit through films that focus on identity, culture, and human resilience. His previous works, including Identity Card, Lihaaf – The Quilt, and Side A Side B, have earned critical acclaim and recognition at several global film festivals.

Originally from Jammu and Kashmir, Khan has consistently highlighted stories rooted in Indian realities and regional experiences. Through his production house, Tariq Khan Productions, he has focused on creating cinema that balances artistic depth with culturally authentic storytelling.

The successful Cannes premiere of Bombay Story is expected to strengthen the film’s prospects for international distribution and theatrical releases across multiple territories. Industry observers believe the positive reception could further enhance the visibility of independent Indian cinema in global markets.

With Bombay Story, Tariq Khan continues his effort to present Indian narratives with emotional honesty and cinematic depth to audiences around the world, reinforcing the growing global appetite for rooted, story-driven films from India.
