In a bold move to revisit one of India’s most seismic chapters of political history, Sony LIV has announced ‘The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case’, a gripping new series based on the real-life investigation that followed the tragic assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Produced in collaboration with Applause Entertainment and Kukunoor Movies, the series is adapted from the best-selling nonfiction book Ninety Days by senior investigative journalist Anirudhya Mitra.
Helmed by National Award-winning director Nagesh Kukunoor and co-written with Rohit Banawalikar and Sriram Rajan, ‘The Hunt’ promises to take viewers deep into a world fraught with intelligence lapses, cross-border conspiracies, moral ambiguity, and the painstaking quest for justice that followed the May 1991 assassination in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
‘The Hunt’ is not just another procedural drama — it’s a layered political thriller that captures the enormity of the investigation conducted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up under the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The series dramatizes the tireless 90-day operation that unfolded against the clock, cutting across states, borders, and bureaucratic roadblocks to unearth a plot that would shock the nation.
The cast features a robust ensemble of acclaimed talent. Amit Sial takes on the role of D.R. Kaarthikeyan, the SIT Chief who led the investigation with relentless drive. Sahil Vaid portrays Amit Verma, SP-CBI; Bhagavathi Perumal plays DSP Ragothaman; while Danish Iqbal and Girish Sharma appear as DIGs Amod Kanth and Radhavinod Raju respectively. The cast also includes Vidyut Garg as Captain Ravindran (NSG), along with Shafeeq Mustafa, Anjana Balaji, B Sai Dinesh, Shruthy Jayan, and Gouri Menon in key supporting roles.
Actor Amit Sial shared his perspective on the role, saying, “This isn’t just a crime procedural drama; it’s about how invisible hands shape history. The role challenged me to explore the darkest corners of power, grief, and justice. I’m honored to portray a character rooted in truth and resilience.”
Set against the volatile backdrop of India’s early 90s political landscape, The Hunt promises a gripping narrative told through the eyes of the men and women who pieced together a conspiracy unlike any other. From botched intelligence leads to moments of raw emotional reckoning, the series aims to blend fact with cinematic tension, while staying grounded in journalistic and legal records.
For Sony LIV, the series continues its slate of fact-based, critically acclaimed originals, following hits like ‘Scam 1992’, ‘Rocket Boys’, and ‘Maharani’. With ‘The Hunt’, the platform adds another bold, truth-driven title to its growing repertoire of premium Indian content.
‘The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case’ will be streaming exclusively on Sony LIV. The release date is expected to be announced soon.
