Five years after its initial release, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2018 epic period drama ‘Padmaavat’ is set to make a grand return to theatres. The film, which stars Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Shahid Kapoor, will re-release on January 24, 2025, as confirmed by the makers, PTI reported.
Based on the 16th-century poem ‘Padmavat’ by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, Padmaavat chronicles the legendary story of Rani Padmavati. The film explores her unparalleled beauty, her resistance against the relentless Sultan Alauddin Khilji, and her courage in the face of adversity. While Deepika Padukone portrays the regal Rani Padmavati, Ranveer Singh takes on the intense role of Alauddin Khilji, and Shahid Kapoor plays Padmavati’s husband, Raja Ratan Singh.
The production house, Viacom18 Studios, announced the re-release on Instagram, sharing a poster with the caption, “Witness the epic tale on the big screen again. #Padmaavat in cinemas on 24th January.”
‘Padmaavat’ initially hit theatres on January 25, 2018, following a turbulent release marred by controversy. Several Rajput groups, including the Karni Sena, objected to the film’s portrayal of Rani Padmavati, alleging historical inaccuracies. The protests escalated in October 2017, when a film set in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur was attacked and set ablaze.
Despite the challenges, ‘Padmaavat’ received widespread acclaim for its grandeur, performances, and Bhansali’s directorial brilliance. The movie also emerged as a commercial success, solidifying its place in Indian cinema’s hall of fame.
The re-release of ‘Padmaavat’ comes amidst a wave of classics returning to theatres, offering audiences another chance to experience cinematic masterpieces on the big screen. The film’s timeless narrative and opulent visuals promise to captivate both first-time viewers and loyal fans.
Mark your calendars for January 24 to relive the grandeur and drama of ‘Padmaavat’ in theatres!
