Actor-filmmaker Riteish Deshmukh has finally unveiled the release date of his ambitious historical epic ‘Raja Shivaji’, based on the life and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Taking to social media, Riteish announced that the film will hit theatres across India on May 1, 2026, coinciding with Maharashtra Day. The poster, released in six languages — Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam — carries a powerful tribute to the Maratha warrior king, IANS reported from Mumbai.
In a heartfelt statement, Riteish, who not only directs but also plays the titular role, said, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a historical figure — he is an emotion that lives in the hearts of millions. To be able to tell a part of his extraordinary story is both an honour and a great responsibility. Releasing the film on Maharashtra Day feels especially meaningful, and with a cast we could only dream of, we feel truly fortunate. We hope audiences across languages connect with the spirit of Raja Shivaji as deeply as we have.”
Produced by Genelia Deshmukh under Mumbai Film Company in association with Jio Studios, the film promises a grand cinematic retelling of Shivaji Maharaj’s inspiring rise—set against a turbulent era of rival empires and revolutionary uprisings. As per the official announcement, the film is currently being shot at various historical locations in Mumbai and Wai.
Speaking on the production’s emotional and historical weight, Genelia added, “This film has been a labour of love — a journey shaped by years of thought, research, and reverence. Raja Shivaji is a heartfelt tribute to the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who continues to inspire generations.”
Backing the film with full conviction is Jyoti Deshpande, President of Jio Studios, who shared, “Raja Shivaji is more than just a film — it’s a celebration of Swarajya and what that means to every Indian. Our goal is to bring the awe-inspiring life of Shivaji Maharaj from India to the world.”
Raja Shivaji features a stellar cast, including Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi, Amole Gupte, and Genelia Deshmukh. The film will explore the transformation of young Shivaji into the fearless and visionary Raja Shivaji, who sparked a revolution that changed the course of Indian history.
Touted as one of the most ambitious Indian historical films, Raja Shivaji aims to reach a pan-India and global audience, honouring the legacy of a ruler who is deeply revered across generations.
