Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma returns with a bone-chilling psychological thriller that probes deep into obsession and digital-age dangers. Titled ‘Saaree’, the film is all set to premiere exclusively on Lionsgate Play this June 27, and promises to take audiences on a disturbing journey through desire, control, and emotional unraveling.
According to a Lionsgate press release, Saaree explores a terrifying descent from admiration to obsession, inspired by true events that reflect the grim realities of social media-infused relationships today. Set against the backdrop of a vacation with friends, the film pivots on a single moment — a fleeting glimpse of a woman in a saree — that transforms into an all-consuming fixation. The protagonist, Kittu, played by Satya Yadu, becomes dangerously obsessed with a woman (portrayed by Aaradhya Devi) after seeing her in a saree. What begins as harmless infatuation spirals into relentless stalking, emotional manipulation, and a nightmarish loss of personal boundaries.
The film is written and presented by Ram Gopal Varma and directed by Giri Krishna Kamal. Lionsgate Play will stream Saaree in four languages — Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam — starting June 27, inviting a wider audience into the dark, unsettling world it portrays.
Speaking about the film, Ram Gopal Varma said, “Saaree isn’t just fiction – it’s rooted in the terrifying reality of digital stalking that is alarmingly common today. Relationships are forming faster online than in real life, often with little understanding of who the person really is. With Saaree, I wanted to expose how something as seemingly harmless as a glance or a social media message can unravel into a full-blown emotional nightmare.”
He continued, “The saree in this story isn’t just a garment – it’s a symbol of how desire and illusion are projected onto women. It represents how even the most traditional attire can be fetishized, objectified. The story reveals what happens when obsession blurs reality, when someone hears a ‘no’ and convinces themselves it means ‘yes’. The descent from admiration to possession is raw, unsettling, and all too real.”
‘Saaree’ is poised to add a new layer to Ram Gopal Varma’s repertoire of psychological cinema. Known for pushing boundaries and delving into the uncomfortable, the director here taps into a truth that feels deeply familiar in today’s hyper-connected world — where a momentary interaction can spiral into something far more sinister.
‘Saaree’ premieres exclusively on Lionsgate Play from June 27.
