Netflix and SEGA have announced a new multi-title collaboration to adapt games from SEGA’s catalogue, with a feature film based on ‘Crazy Taxi’ as the first project. The slate also includes a new animated ‘Sonic’ series and a live-action film based on ‘Stranger Than Heaven’.

According to a Netflix statement yesterday, the ‘Crazy Taxi’ film will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the writing duo behind the 2025 reboot of ‘The Naked Gun’.

Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film, along with SEGA’s Toru Nakahara, will produce the film.

The game debuted in arcades in 1999, and the latest franchise title, ‘Crazy Taxi: World Tour’, is scheduled for release in 2027.

The new ‘Sonic’ animated series is in development with Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara and is aimed at an upper pre-school audience. Netflix said all three seasons of ‘Sonic Prime’ are currently available to stream exclusively on the platform.

Meanwhile, ‘Stranger Than Heaven’, from RGG Studio, will be adapted as a live-action film. Set in early 20th-century Japan, it follows a foreigner’s rise from a destitute stranger to a feared yakuza and entertainment tycoon.

Details of the film remain under wraps, with Nakahara attached as producer.

Netflix’s Brandon Riegg said the collaboration brings together three different eras of SEGA’s catalogue, while SEGA President and COO Shuji Utsumi said the company is proud to see Netflix apply its storytelling approach to the titles.
