Fifty percent of Americans are of the opinion that they watch content with subtitles most of the time. It’s a habit that’s seen reflected on Netflix too — nearly half of all viewing hours on platform in the US happen with subtitles or captions on.
With such data in hand, Netflix, according to an official statement, has decided to take heed of public opinion and decided to make the experience even better for watchers.
Just in time for all the twists, inner monologues, and intense eye contact in the final season of‘You’, Netflix has introduced a new option: original language subtitles that show only the spoken dialogue.
Until now, according to the Netflix statement, if subscribers wanted subtitles in the original language, one turned on Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH/CC), which includednot only dialogue but also audio cues like phone buzzing or dramatic music swells, as well as speaker names. The new subtitle option will first appear on new titles coming to Netflix.
When one opens the language picker while watching the new ‘You’ season, one will now see two subtitle options in English: English, which shows only the spoken dialogue, and English (CC), which includes both dialogue and audio cues (like door slams). Netflix said it was not stopping at English as these subtitles will be available on all new Netflix originals in every language the platform offers in addition to SDH/CC in future.
And, like on Prime Video, subscribers on Netflix too can customize your subtitles by changing the size and font.
