Neeraj Ghaywan’s film ‘Homebound’ has progressed to the next stage of voting in the International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards, placing India’s official entry among the 15 films still in contention for Oscars 2026. The development marks a key moment for the film as it continues its run on the global awards circuit.
As per a PTI report, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) confirmed the shortlist on its official website, noting that 15 films have advanced to the next round of voting from a pool of entries submitted by 86 countries and regions. ‘Homebound’ now stands alongside shortlisted titles from countries including Argentina, Brazil, France and Germany, underscoring the competitive nature of the category.
The shortlisting is being viewed as a significant milestone for the film and for India’s presence at international award platforms. Featuring Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa in the lead roles, ‘Homebound’ has steadily built momentum since its festival debut, drawing attention for its storytelling and performances.
Dharma Productions, which backed the project, shared the update on Instagram, calling the moment deeply special for the team. “Homebound has been shortlisted for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards. We’re deeply grateful for the extraordinary love and support we’ve received from around the world,” the production house wrote.
AMPAS further clarified that the shortlist was finalised after a preliminary round of voting. In the next phase, Academy members from all branches can opt in to participate, with the condition that they must watch all 15 shortlisted films before casting their votes for the final nominations.
The film follows the journey of childhood friends Shoaib and Chandan, portrayed by Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, whose shared dream of joining the police force becomes a defining force in their lives. Janhvi Kapoor plays a pivotal role that adds depth to the emotional narrative, widening the film’s dramatic scope.
‘Homebound’ has already enjoyed a strong international festival run. It premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 and later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was named Second Runner-Up for the International Audience Choice Award.
Produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla and Apoorva Mehta, with Marijke deSouza and Melita Toscan Du Plantier as co-producers, the film also lists Martin Scorsese and Pravin Khairnar as executive producers. With the Oscar shortlist announcement, ‘Homebound’ now moves a step closer to a potential nomination, further strengthening its global standing.
