Meta’s Charm-ed AI offensive, including VR glasses with 3D cinema

Even as Meta unveiled a series of AI-heavy products, including VR Glasses that double as a personal cinema, immersive live-sports screen, private multi-screen workspace and gaming platform, the centerpiece was Charm, a small device that accesses Muse directly, bypassing AI apps on smartphones.

The Meta VR Glasses are a roughly 100-gram virtual-reality device designed to combine a personal cinema, immersive live sports, private multi-screen workspace and gaming platform in a glasses form factor.

From November, Disney+ subscribers in select countries will be able to stream films including ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Black Panther’ in 3D, with themed environments. VR-enhanced versions of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ will also be available through Disney Immersive Cinema by ILM.

Meta said it is working with Prime Video, YouTube, DIRECTV, AMC+, Crunchyroll, Plex, Tubi and others, while Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ will offer their 3D catalogues on the platform for the first time.

The glasses feature a 5K micro-OLED display, Meta AI controls, hand- and eye-based interaction, and an external compute-and-battery puck, and will launch in spring 2027 at $1,299.99.

Meta, which unveiled the products at its annual Connect event on September 23, said the glasses are five times lighter than Meta Quest 3 because sensors and display are housed in the glasses while computing, battery and storage sit in the connected puck, which can clip to a pocket or bag.

The device has a 5K Infinite Display with 37 pixels per degree, pancake lenses, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos spatial audio. The puck uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, provides up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback and supports 45W fast charging.

The glasses are the first IMAX Enhanced-certified VR device, Meta said, allowing select films to be viewed at home in IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio.

Thousands of titles are expected internationally by launch, including 3D titles from Lionsgate, while Meta is partnering with filmmaker James Cameron and Lightstorm Vision on films arriving in 3D in 2027.

Sports will be another major focus. Meta said ESPN’s Immersive Sports will offer 8K streaming and 180-degree views, beginning with college football on Meta Quest this year.

For work, the glasses can create one or several large private screens and turn a flat surface into a keyboard and touchpad, while full-colour passthrough keeps the user’s surroundings visible.

More than 75 games will support hand-gesture play at launch, while Xbox Cloud Gaming will provide access to hundreds more.

Meta is also introducing Hologram Calling, which creates a photorealistic digital version of the user with real-time expressions and spatial audio.

The feature will work across calling apps including WhatsApp and Zoom, allowing people on phones or computers to see the user’s hologram during calls.

Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg, who was speaking at the annual Meta Connect event in the US, said the company was optimistic about an AI future.

He had distanced himself and Meta from recent calls by rivals, according to an AP report earlier, for a coordinated slowdown in the development of advanced artificial intelligence, arguing that individual labs can and should ensure their technology is safe.

At Connect 2026, Zuckerberg said that Meta’s recently launched agent Muse is the “centerpiece” of Meta’s hopeful outlook for the future of AI, according to an AP report.

A Reuters report added that Zuckerberg took repeated digs at Apple during Meta’s annual event, only to borrow a page from Steve Jobs’ playbook for ‌ a surprise reveal: a pocket-watch-sized device that carries Meta’s viral Muse AI agent into the real world.

The device, called Muse Charm, highlights a broader shift at the social media giant that has long sought to escape Apple  and Google’s operating systems with a platform of its own.
