Meta has announced a significant crackdown on inappropriate content, removing over 17 million posts from Facebook and Instagram in India in April.
This effort aligns with Meta’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful online environment by adhering to its company policies, The TOI reported.
Out of the total, more than 11.6 million posts were removed from Facebook, while over 5.4 million posts were taken down from Instagram.
The removals were part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to enforce its community standards and ensure a safe user experience.
“We measure the number of pieces of content (such as posts, photos, videos, or comments) we take action for going against our standards. Taking action could include removing a piece of content from Facebook or Instagram or covering photos or videos that may be disturbing to some audiences with a warning,” said Meta.
Meta has equipped users with several tools to report violations, download data, and recover accounts. In April, the company received 17,124 reports via the Indian grievance mechanism for Facebook. Users were able to resolve 9,977 issues themselves using these tools.
The remaining 7,147 reports required specialized review. Meta analyzed the content against its policies and took action on 4,303 complaints. For the remaining 2,844 reports, after review, no action was deemed necessary.
On Instagram, Meta received 12,924 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism. Users resolved 5,941 issues with the available tools. The remaining 6,983 reports required specialized review, leading to action on 3,206 complaints. The remaining 3,777 reports were reviewed but no action was taken.
These actions comply with the IT Rules (2021), which mandate that large social media platforms publish monthly compliance reports in India. Meta’s proactive measures highlight its commitment to transparency and accountability in addressing content violations.
Meta’s substantial removal of over 17 million posts from Facebook and Instagram demonstrates its robust approach to maintaining community standards and ensuring user safety. The company continues to improve its reporting mechanisms and tools to empower users in resolving issues and upholding a respectful online environment.
