Marvel has announced a leadership restructuring across its comics and franchise divisions, appointing Brad Winderbaum as Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics & Franchise, while naming David Abdo as General Manager, Comics & Franchise. The changes also mark the planned departure of longtime Marvel executive Dan Buckleyafter nearly three decades with the company.
Under the new structure, according to a statement from the company earlier this week, Winderbaum will oversee the creative direction of Marvel’s publishing portfolio and global brand and franchise operations, in addition to continuing his current responsibilities across television and animation.
Abdo, joining Marvel from Disney, will report to Winderbaum and oversee operational aspects of the comics and franchise business.
Commenting on the appointments, Kevin Feige said Winderbaum’s creative leadership and Abdo’s operational expertise would help shape “the next 90 years of Marvel’s comic book legacy.”
Feige said Winderbaum had demonstrated an ability to lead creative teams and develop episodic storytelling that connected with audiences globally, while Abdo brought experience in operational growth and digital innovation.
Winderbaum currently serves as Head of Marvel Television and Marvel Animation, overseeing the studio’s slate of live-action and animated series for Disney+. He has executive produced Marvel Studios shows including ‘Hawkeye’, ‘Loki’season 2, ‘Agatha: All Along’, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, ‘X-Men ’97’ and ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’.
He joined Marvel Studios during production of ‘Iron Man’ and later became an executive producer on ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and ‘Black Widow’.
Marvel said C.B. Cebulski, Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics, will report to Winderbaum under the new leadership arrangement. The company described Winderbaum as an Emmy Award-winning executive overseeing Marvel’s television and animation businesses.
Abdo most recently served as General Manager at Disney Music Group, where he handled day-to-day operations of Disney’s global music division. Marvel said he brings more than two decades of leadership experience in media businesses, with expertise in digital transformation and operational management. During his tenure at Disney Music Group, the division recorded multiple years of record-breaking profits, according to the statement.
On Buckley’s planned departure, Feige credited the executive with overseeing Marvel’s expansion across comics and entertainment platforms.
