The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet received a response from the three Bollywood actors, including Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn, who were sent a notice over an advertisement, FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said yesterday.

Speaking at a ‘Meet the Press’ event organised by the Mumbai Press Club, yesterday Mundhe said promoting a product was not necessarily wrong, but publicizing it in an improper manner was, according to a PTI report.

Replying to a question on commercials and surrogate advertising, the IAS officer stated, “Whatever advertisements we see — whether in newspapers, on television or on social media — are under our radar. We are watching for violations.”

According to media reports, Mundhe further added that the issue was about food safety and standards regulations implementation. “One of the regulations is about advertisement and misleading claims,” he said, adding that the regulation came into existence in 2018 and came into force from July 1, 2019.

The commissioner also said the FDA would act against food business operators failing to meet prescribed standards, irrespective of whether their consumers were film-industry workers, labourers or others.

He added that citizens could lodge complaints through the FDA’s portal, following which officials would examine the issue and take appropriate action.
