Kuku TV has announced ‘Babasaheb’, a historical microdrama exploring the formative years of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the social reformer and architect of the Indian Constitution. The series traces his childhood experiences with caste discrimination, his determination to pursue education and his journey to America, highlighting the challenges and aspirations that shaped his early life.
According to a Kuku TV announcement, the series draws inspiration from Ambedkar’s autobiographical account ‘Waiting for a Visa’ and uses historical incidents to portray the social inequalities and barriers to education he faced. Before becoming one of India’s most influential figures, Bhimrao Ambedkar had to navigate deep-rooted discrimination, experiences that helped shape his views on equality and social justice.
Education is a central theme of ‘Babasaheb’. Despite the social and financial obstacles before him, Bhimrao remained committed to learning. His journey took him to America in 1913, marking an important chapter in his pursuit of knowledge. The series presents education not merely as a personal ambition but as a means of challenging inequality and creating new possibilities.
The microdrama features five actors portraying Ambedkar at different stages of his life. The cast also includes National Award-winning filmmaker Jayant Somalkar. Shirish Pawar, known for ‘Court’, plays Ramji Sakpal, while National School of Drama alumnus Snehlata Tagde, who appeared in ‘All We Imagine as Light’, portrays Jijabai Sakpal. Veteran actor Rajesh Bhonsle plays educator Krishnaji Keluskar. Satchit Puranik, the show’s creative producer, also makes a cameo appearance.
Adding another cultural element to the series, members of the cast lend their voices to two Kabir dohas and a folk song featured in the microdrama.
The production combines live-action performances with AI-generated environments and sequences to recreate period settings and locations. The makers have used the technology to build the historical backdrop while keeping human performances at the centre of the storytelling.
With ‘Babasaheb’, Kuku TV brings Ambedkar’s early years to its mobile-first microdrama format, offering viewers a look at the childhood experiences, family relationships and educational aspirations that helped shape his journey.
The series is now streaming on the Kuku TV app.
