Junglee Pictures, the film development, production, and distribution arm of The Times Group, hosted an exclusive screening of its upcoming film ‘Haq’ at The Chanakya Mall in New Delhi.
The event was attended by a distinguished gathering that included Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and Kiren Rijiju, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, Former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, and Vineet Jain, Managing Director of The Times Group.
According to a press release, ‘Haq’, directed by Suparn S Varma, is a gripping courtroom drama starring Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi in the lead roles.
The film draws inspiration from a landmark Supreme Court judgment and explores the intense conflict between personal faith and secular law. It challenges long-standing notions of patriarchy and power while celebrating justice, equality, and reform. Written by Reshu Nath, the narrative promises to spark meaningful conversation and keep audiences engrossed till the very end.
Produced by Junglee Pictures in association with Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios, ‘Haq’ also marks the debut of Vartika Singh in a pivotal, plot-twisting role. The film features powerful performances by Sheeba Chaddha, Danish Hussain, and Aseem Hattangady.
Speaking at the screening, Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, lauded the film’s powerful message, saying, “We have certainly come a long way. We talk about Nari Shakti — it’s such a powerful message. The message of this movie, the star cast — it’s a beautiful production. It is cinematic excellence. Reform had to come from within the community. Some of what you see in the second half, I think, is about seeking justice and denial. This is a powerful message, as this is a quest for justice. It’s not about women empowerment but about getting justice when it’s denied because of personal laws. Everybody should see this movie.”
Union Minister of Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, also praised the film, stating, “I must congratulate Junglee Pictures for coming out with a beautiful project. The stars have done total justice to the roles they played. When Justice Chandrachud was Justice and we used to speak, I personally believed that women should not have to go to courts to seek justice. Things don’t need to come to this. I thank you for inviting me here. I am the Minister of Minority Affairs — there is work to be done. This should not be limited to a film; it’s an incident. Every Indian should watch it.”
Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena commended the film’s relevance, adding, “We have seen the first half as yet, but you can see that justice in the country is costly and difficult. Look at how Bano goes to court, and the court tells her to go to the Qazi — it was unfortunate. This won’t be eradicated until there is implementation of the UCC. I don’t want to associate it with a community, but there is a reality. The Shah Bano case is an eye-opener.”
Former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud reflected on the emotional significance of the story, remarking, “This is an emotional and personal moment for me. The Shah Bano judgment was delivered four decades earlier. He retired within two months after delivering it. The rights given to women can’t be taken away from them — these are rights given to them. It’s a vindication of someone who stood by the law. After he retired, he was threatened too. I hope wherever he is, he must be happy.”
Speaking at the event, Vineet Jain, Managing Director of The Times Group, said, “There are two kinds of movies — entertaining and thought-provoking, yet still entertaining. Haq is one such movie.”
Drawing inspiration from landmark legal milestones, ‘Haq’ encapsulates the relentless pursuit of truth within India’s judicial system, underscoring the spirit of justice and women’s rights. The film is set to release in cinemas worldwide on November 7 and is expected to be one of the year’s most talked-about and fearless releases.
