Filmmaker Saurabh Shukla’s directorial venture ‘Jab Khuli Kitaab’, starring Dimple Kapadia and Pankaj Kapur, is set to premiere on ZEE5 on March 6. The film explores late-life relationships, blending humour and emotional depth to present a sensitive portrayal of love, companionship, and the courage to begin again.
According to an PTI report, the film also features Aparshakti Khurana in a pivotal role and focuses on themes of honesty, forgiveness, and the evolving nature of relationships. The makers released the trailer on Monday, offering a glimpse into the quiet, familiar world of Gopal and Anusuya, a couple bound by five decades of shared routines, memories, and silent understanding.
Their seemingly peaceful life takes an unexpected turn when Anusuya reveals a long-buried secret that shakes the foundation of their relationship. Struggling to process the revelation, Gopal finds himself torn between heartbreak and dignity and ultimately chooses to seek a divorce. Their journey brings them to a young lawyer, played by Khurana, where difficult conversations begin to unravel years of unspoken emotions, lingering pain, and buried affection.
Kapur praised Shukla’s vision, describing it as rare to see a filmmaker explore mature love with such honesty, humour, and tenderness. He said the film presents a deeply real narrative that reflects how love evolves over time, adding that portraying a man rediscovering love in unexpected circumstances was a rewarding experience.
Kapadia also spoke about her character Anusuya, calling it a role written with depth and honesty. She said the project offered her the opportunity to work with Kapur and collaborate with Shukla while portraying a nuanced character driven by emotional courage. According to her, Anusuya’s journey is rooted in honesty within a long-standing marriage rather than a desire to break it, making the character both complex and relatable.
Khurana described his role as a catalyst in the story, saying his character becomes a mirror through which the central couple confront their past. He noted that the generational gap in the narrative creates moments that are both comic and emotionally revealing, while the film handles themes of forgiveness and connection with both lightness and depth.
The film is presented by Applause Entertainment and produced under the Shoestrap Films banner. With its focus on relationships shaped by time, memory, and emotional truth, ‘Jab Khuli Kitaab’ seeks to offer audiences a poignant exploration of love and second chances when it begins streaming on March 6.
