Programming for a diverse country like India is a careful blend of art and science, where data and instinct work hand in hand, says Monika Shergill, Vice President – Content, Netflix India.
Emphasising the importance of plurality in storytelling, Shergill underlined that the platform’s approach is rooted in offering audiences a wide spectrum of viewing experiences that reflect India’s linguistic, cultural, and creative diversity, according to a PTI report from Mumbai.
In an interview to PTI, Shergill said the responsibility of an entertainment streaming service goes beyond simply delivering popular content. For Netflix, it is about ensuring that every time a viewer logs in, they discover something fresh, engaging, and meaningful.
She highlighted that audiences should be able to find everything on the platform — from exciting new titles and timeless classics to stories emerging from deep within India, across different languages, as well as compelling narratives from around the world.
“Every time members tune in to watch Netflix, they should have something new, something exciting, something really special, something really classic, something from a deep part of India, something in a different language and from across the world,” Shergill said.
She added that this philosophy has remained central to Netflix’s global mission of entertaining audiences everywhere, while staying locally relevant in markets like India.
Shergill noted that intuition plays a crucial role alongside analytics when programming for India, a market marked by varied tastes and evolving consumption habits. The platform’s content strategy, she explained, is designed to cater to this plurality, allowing viewers to move seamlessly between genres, languages, formats, and cultural contexts.
As Netflix continues to expand its Indian slate, Shergill reiterated that the company remains committed to serving audiences with depth, variety, and consistency. The goal, she said, is not just to meet expectations but to exceed them — ensuring that Netflix remains a space where stories from India and the world coexist, resonate, and entertain in equal measure.
