Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has announced his next film with actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh, titled ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’, which is scheduled to release in theatres on June 12, 2026.
The project marks the second consecutive collaboration between the director and the actor following their widely discussed film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’.
According to a PTI report, the makers unveiled the film’s title along with a teaser on Friday (March 13). The brief promo offers a glimpse into what appears to be an emotional love story set against the backdrop of the Partition of India, hinting at a narrative that blends personal relationships with historical upheaval.
In the teaser, the voiceover by Dosanjh narrates the story of a romance that continues to haunt an elderly man, portrayed by veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, for over 78 years. Described as “a story from a dream world,” the promo gradually reveals glimpses of a younger love story involving characters played by Vedang Raina and Sharvari Wagh. Vedang is believed to portray the younger version of Shah’s character, linking the narrative across different timelines.
Speaking earlier about the project, Ali had described the film as an expansive yet intimate story. “This film has a big heart. It has a large canvas yet is very personal. It is a story of a boy and a girl, but also a country,” the filmmaker had said in a statement.
The screenplay of ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ has been written by Ali along with Nayanika Mahtani. The film features cinematography by Sylvester Fonseca and editing by Aarti Bajaj.
One of the highlights of the project is the reunion of the celebrated creative trio — Ali, music composer A. R. Rahman and lyricist Irshad Kamil. The trio has previously delivered acclaimed soundtracks for films such as ‘Rockstar’, ‘Tamasha’ and ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, and their collaboration once again raises expectations around the film’s music.
‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ is produced by Applause Entertainment, Window Seat Films and Ali’s frequent collaborator Mohit Choudhary. With its emotional premise, historical backdrop and a strong creative team, the film is expected to be one of the notable releases of 2026.
