ZEE5 has unveiled the trailer of its latest original investigative docu-series ‘Hathras – 16 Days’, a hard-hitting exploration of the 2020 Hathras case that triggered nationwide outrage and debate. Directed by Patrick Graham, the series traces the 16 days following the incident and examines the layers of caste, gender, institutional silence and media scrutiny surrounding the case.

According to a ZEE5 press release, the investigative docu-series is now streaming exclusively on Hindi ZEE5. Produced as a Docubay Original, the series is set in rural Uttar Pradesh and follows journalist Tanushree Pandey’s efforts to uncover the truth behind the incident amid mounting pressure, public attention and institutional challenges.

The trailer offers a disturbing glimpse into the events that unfolded after the assault of a young Dalit woman in Hathras and the public response that followed across the country. What begins as the investigation into a brutal crime gradually unfolds into a broader examination of caste dynamics, political influence, media narratives and the mechanisms that often shape public perception around such cases.

At the centre of the narrative is journalist Tanushree Pandey, whose reporting and pursuit of accountability form the emotional core of the series. The documentary combines on-ground reporting, first-hand testimonies, archival footage and perspectives from journalists, activists, law enforcement officials and policymakers to reconstruct the timeline and examine the larger social and institutional issues linked to the case.

Speaking about the series, Kaveri Das, Business Head – Hindi ZEE5 and Chief Channel Officer – &TV at ZEE5, said the platform remains focused on telling stories that encourage audiences to reflect on social realities. She noted that ‘Hathras – 16 Days’ is not just a retelling of a widely discussed incident, but also an exploration of the prejudices and systemic silence that continue to exist in society.

Director Patrick Graham described the project as more than a conventional true-crime documentary, adding that the series attempts to examine the deeper forces surrounding such incidents, including caste hierarchy, authority and narrative control. He also highlighted the role of journalists who continued pursuing the story despite pressure and resistance.

With its investigative approach and socially charged subject matter, ‘Hathras – 16 Days’ adds to the growing slate of documentary-driven storytelling on Indian streaming platforms, where real-life stories and socio-political narratives are increasingly drawing audience attention.
