HBO has unveiled the first trailer and release date for ‘Rooster’, a new comedy series starring Steve Carell in the lead. The ten-episode show is set to premiere on March 8, with fresh episodes rolling out weekly until May 10, marking Carell’s return to television in a character-driven comedy space.
As per a UNI report, ‘Rooster’ has been created by Ted Lasso and Shrinking co-creator Bill Lawrence along with his longtime Scrubs collaborator Matt Tarses. The series blends campus comedy with sharp humour and emotional undertones, promising a mix of chaos, wit and layered relationships.
According to Variety, the trailer introduces Carell as a bestselling author famous for a popular book series who arrives on a college campus to visit his daughter, played by Charly Clive. She is a professor grappling with personal turmoil, including accidentally burning down a faculty house and punching her husband—also a professor—after discovering he has left her for a graduate student.
Carell’s character soon finds himself immersed in campus life, contributing at the college, bonding with students, attending frat parties and attempting to live up to the bold, larger-than-life persona of “Rooster,” the confident hero from his novels. The trailer hints at comedic clashes between fiction and reality as the author navigates an environment far removed from his carefully crafted stories.
HBO Max shared the trailer on its official Instagram handle, generating early buzz around the series. Rooster also features an ensemble cast including Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley and Lauren Tsai. The show is executive produced by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, alongside Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer for Doozer, with Steve Carell also serving as an executive producer. It is produced by Warner Bros. Television.
Steve Carell, best known for his iconic role as Michael Scott in ‘The Office’, continues to enjoy a strong following in television comedy. With ‘Rooster’, HBO is betting on a familiar face paired with a seasoned creative team to deliver a campus-set comedy that balances absurd situations with character-led storytelling.
