Cinephiles across India are reliving the golden era of Hindi cinema as late filmmaker Guru Dutt’s iconic works ‘Pyaasa’ and ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ continue their extended theatrical run in 4K-restored versions at PVR theatres nationwide.
According to ANI, the decision to extend screenings follows the overwhelming response to the re-release of Dutt’s centenary showcase two weeks ago. The event featured 4K restorations of ‘Baaz’, ‘Pyaasa’, ‘Mr. & Mrs. 55’, ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’, ‘Aar Paar’, and ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chand’, restored by NFDC-NFAI and distributed by Ultra Media & Entertainment.
Sushil Kumar Agrawal, MD & CEO of Ultra Media & Entertainment, said the audience demand reflects Guru Dutt’s enduring cinematic legacy. “The centenary celebrations demonstrated just how timeless Guru Dutt’s films remain. The demand to keep ‘Pyaasa’ and‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ in theatres highlights their emotional and cultural resonance across generations. Experiencing these classics in pristine 4K on the big screen is the finest way to honour his cinematic genius,” he noted.
Widely regarded as two of Indian cinema’s greatest masterpieces, ‘Pyaasa’ (1957) is a lyrical exploration of love, art, and disillusionment in post-independence India. Written, directed, and produced by Dutt, the film starred Dutt himself alongside Waheeda Rehman and Mala Sinha.
‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ (1962), headlined by Meena Kumari, remains a haunting portrayal of aristocratic decline and female loneliness. Its evocative performances and storytelling have ensured its lasting place in global cinematic history.
