HBO is bringing back Lena Dunham’s popular dramedy series ‘Girls’ with a limited series of five episodes. Production is set to begin in 2027, ten years after the original show ended in 2017.
According to an ANI report, which quoted Variety, the revival will feature the original cast, including Dunham as Hannah Horvath, Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels, Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro and Andrew Rannells as Elijah Krantz.
The original series aired on HBO from 2012 to 2017. Created by Dunham, ‘Girls’ follows a group of friends as they navigate relationships, careers, friendships and the challenges of adult life in New York City.
Dunham will return as the creator, writer, showrunner and lead actor. The new episodes will revisit the characters after a gap of nearly ten years, offering a fresh look at their lives.
The revival comes as the characters approach a new stage of adulthood.
Judd Apatow will also return as an executive producer, alongside Dunham, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen.
The returning cast members Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells will serve as co-executive producers.
Dunham said the team had always wanted to return to ‘Girls’ only if there was a meaningful story to tell.
She added that revisiting the series would give them an opportunity to look at the characters with greater understanding and a fresh perspective.
