Family Man2makers clarify as ban calls mushroom

Family Man2 lead actor Bajpayee lauds OTT as a platform

Under pressure from ban calls issued by politicians from India’s southern states on alleged misrepresentation of Tamils and Sri Lankan Tamils, makers of Amazon Prime Video web series Family Man2 tried to do firefighting and issued a clarification yesterday allaying fears.

Raj and DK, the directors of the second season of spy web series The Family Man, have said people were jumping to conclusions and “making assumptions” based on a couple of shots in the trailer that was released some days back.

In their statement, the makers of the web series said, “Some assumptions and impressions have been made based on just a couple of shots in the trailer. Many of our lead cast members and key members of the creative & writing team are Tamilians. We are very cognizant of the sentiments of the Tamil people and Tamil culture and have nothing but the utmost love and respect towards our Tamil people.

“We have put in years of hard work into this show, and we have taken great pains to bring to our audiences a sensitive, balanced and riveting story – much like we did in Season 1 of the show. We request everyone to wait and watch the show when it releases. We know you’ll appreciate it once you watch it.”

Earlier, the government of India’s southern State Tamil Nadu on Monday urged the federal government to take immediate steps to either stop or ban the release of the serial ‘The Family Man-2’  on Prime Video not only in Tamil Nadu but also across the country since it depicted Eelam Tamils in a highly objectionable manner, the New Indian Express had reported.

State’s Minister for Information Technology, Mano Thangaraj, in a letter to Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar in New Delhi had stated the trailer of the web series in Hindi was aimed at discrediting and distorting the historical struggle of Eelam Tamils in Sri Lanka.

“The sacrifices of their long drawn out democratic battle has been intentionally undermined and it could not, by any stretch of the imagination, be considered merely as a serial with any value for Tamil culture. Moreover, a serial which is loaded with insults and insinuations against the glorious Tamil culture could never be considered as the one having any broadcasting value,” the newspaper had quoted from the Thangaraj letter to the federal government.

The Minister also pointed out that, for example, branding Tamil-speaking actress Samantha as a terrorist in the serial is directly an attack on the pride of Tamils living around the world and no one would tolerate this kind of motivated and mischievous campaign.

This is not the first time a Prime Video show has run into trouble over content. Two other series, ‘Tandav’ and Patallok’,both made by Bollywood filmmakers and having big stars in lead roles, had run into serious problems with the government and a certain section of the Indian population.

A criminal case against Prime Video India content head Aparna Purohit is still being heard in the Supreme Court, which came to Purohit’s rescue at the last moment after a State court had denied her pre-arrest bail on police complaints filed in the State of Uttar Pradesh against `Tandav’s’ makers, actors and the senior executive of Prime Video for hurting religious sentiments and misrepresenting the image of the State police, apart from other allegations on content of the web series.
