The Walt Disney Company is expanding its focus on video games, giving audiences more ways to experience its characters, stories and franchises. Disney Games is now part of the company’s Disney Entertainment segment, making gaming a bigger part of Disney’s entertainment strategy.
According to a Disney announcement published on August 13, Disney Games has driven an estimated $3.5 billion in consumer spending annually through its licensing partners over the past four years. The business also crossed $4 billion in consumer spending in the latest fiscal year.
Disney said its gaming portfolio includes nine games that have generated more than $1 billion each at retail. The portfolio includes franchises such as ‘Kingdom Hearts’ and ‘Marvel Strike Force’. The company is also developing new games, including ‘Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ and ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’, which is scheduled to arrive in September.
Disney’s gaming business also includes Lucasfilm Games, which covers more than 20 genres across major gaming platforms. Meanwhile, Disney and Pixar mobile games such as ‘Disney Solitaire’, ‘Disney Tsum Tsum’ and ‘Disney Magic Kingdoms’ have crossed 1 billion installs since 2014.
Disney is also working with Epic Games to build an entertainment universe combining gaming, Disney stories and creator-made content. The company said games are becoming an important way for younger audiences to discover and interact with Disney characters and worlds.
Overall, Disney wants gaming to become more than a way to adapt its movies and shows into games. The company is focusing on creating original gaming experiences where audiences can play, create and explore Disney stories in new ways.
