Punjabi superstar and singer Diljit Dosanjh has hinted at a February 2025 release for his highly anticipated film, ‘Punjab 95’, which is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. Taking to Instagram, Dosanjh shared a series of stills from the movie with the caption, “I Challenge the Darkness. ‘Punjab ’95’ In February, PTI reported from Mumbai.
Directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies, ‘Punjab 95’ delves into Khalra’s fearless investigation of human rights violations in Punjab during the turbulent years from 1984 to 1994. Khalra unearthed evidence of thousands of unidentified bodies being illegally cremated in the state. Tragically, in 1995, Khalra disappeared, and years later, four police officers were convicted of his kidnapping and murder.
The film also features Arjun Rampal and Suvinder Vicky, known for his critically acclaimed performance in ‘Kohraa’.
The film has faced several challenges on its journey to release. Originally slated for a world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), it was abruptly removed from the line-up without explanation. Reports suggest the movie’s release was further delayed due to issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Despite these hurdles, fans’ excitement remains high, particularly after Dosanjh’s recent ‘Dil-Luminati India Tour’, which showcased his growing global popularity.
The movie is more than just a biographical drama; it sheds light on one of India’s most controversial human rights cases. Khalra’s unwavering pursuit of justice and his tragic fate underline the importance of accountability and transparency in governance.
With ‘Punjab 95’, Dosanjh not only portrays a pivotal figure in Punjab’s history but also brings attention to a story that deserves a wider audience.
As February approaches, audiences eagerly await the film’s release, anticipating a gripping and impactful narrative from one of Punjab’s most iconic stars.
