In a development that underscores the persistent friction between broadcasters and distribution platform operators (DPOs), Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) channels have gone off air on several cable networks like DEN Networks, Hathway and GTPL. The move follows delays in finalising commercial agreements and rising concerns over non-agreement RIO (reference interconnect offer).
A source from WBD, addressing the issue, said, “The agreement has not been signed, as the ball lies in the court of the DPOs for it to be signed. The DPOs also have a large amount of outstanding monies to be paid to us, which we have been graceful and respectful about not being vocal.”
The source stated that only Rs.1 has been added to the bouquet pricing, yet all the LCOs and MSOs are targeting WBD for not providing any advertising support.
Meanwhile, industry sources confirmed that the dispute extends beyond these operators. SCV Chennai has already initiated on-screen scrolls notifying subscribers, while KCCL in Kerala has sent formal communications demanding discounts, intensifying the standoff.
The sources also informed that the dispute between WBD and NXT digital was setlled by WBD after passing hefty discounts. Incable had put the chanells on ala carte basis after running scrolls.
The developments point to larger concerns within the broadcasting ecosystem, where negotiations on subscription fees, outstanding receivables, and carriage arrangements continue to challenge business continuity.
Broadcasters argue that timely payments and agreement compliance are critical to sustaining content investments, while DPOs have been pressing for relief measures amid competitive market pressures.
The pullback of WBD’s portfolio — spanning key entertainment, lifestyle and factual channels — highlights how unresolved settlements can quickly escalate into service disruptions. With millions of subscribers impacted across multiple platforms, the impasse is being closely watched within the industry.
