DEN Networks CEO SN Sharma, a veteran of the cable TV industry in India, has not only grown with the sector, but has contributed immensely too in its growth. So, when he says that the industry needs to ‘reivent’ and ‘adapt’ to the evolving and changing ecosystem, it carries weight.
Delivering the industry keynote at the recently-concluded SatCab Symposium 2024 in New Delhi on March 18, Sharma emphasized the inevitability of change and the imperative need for the cable TV industry to evolve.
Reflecting on the journey from the inception of cable TV in the 1990s to the present, he highlighted the significant technological advancements and regulatory changes that have shaped the industry.
The address outlined various challenges encountered by cable TV operators, including increasing competition from DTH services, regulatory complexities, and shifting consumer preferences towards OTT platforms and social media.
Sharma underscored the importance of acknowledging these challenges and proactively addressing them to ensure the industry’s survival and growth.
Despite the challenges, Sharma expressed optimism about the opportunities emerging in the cable TV sector. He highlighted the potential for growth in rural areas due to continued electrification and the expanding market base of TV households.
Additionally, he emphasized the untapped potential of leveraging free digital platforms like YouTube to reach a wider audience.
Sharma proposed several strategies for reinventing the cable TV business model. These included re-establishing personal connections with subscribers; empowering cable operators to take charge of network maintenance and customer service, and adopting innovative approaches such as interactive TV and personalized viewing experiences.
A key theme of Sharma’s address was the importance of collaboration within the industry. He advocated for cable operators, MSOs and broadcasters to work together to address common challenges, share infrastructure, and enhance service standards.
Stressing on the need to move away from the ‘mentality of competition’ towards a ‘mindset of collaboration’ for mutual benefit, Sharma’s address highlighted the evolving landscape of the cable TV industry.
His call for reinvention, collaboration, and proactive adaptation resonated with industry stakeholders, setting the stage for collective efforts to navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities ahead.
