Maddock Films announced on Thursday that its upcoming romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, will no longer release in theatres this Friday as originally scheduled. Instead, the film will now debut directly on Amazon Prime Video on May 16.
The move comes in the wake of “recent events and the heightened security drills across the nation,” the production house said in an official statement. The announcement follows Wednesday’s military developments, where the Indian armed forces conducted strategic missile strikes under ‘Operation Sindoor’ in Pakistan, a retaliatory move in response to the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 civilian lives.
According to a press release issued by Prime Video, the decision to opt for a direct-to-digital release was taken out of sensitivity to the ongoing national situation. “In light of the current environment and safety considerations for audiences across regions, the team has decided that Bhool Chuk Maaf will be best enjoyed in the comfort of homes,” the statement read.
Directed by Karan Sharma and backed by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, Bhool Chuk Maaf is described as a lighthearted love story with a twist of humour and emotional depth. The film pairs Rao and Gabbi together for the first time, generating notable excitement among fans of both actors. The trailer, which dropped last week, hinted at a quirky narrative about love, misunderstandings, and redemption, drawing a positive response online.
While the film’s direct-to-streaming shift was unexpected, industry insiders have noted that it reflects a broader trend of OTT platforms becoming go-to destinations for high-profile releases, especially when external circumstances impact traditional distribution.
A source close to the development said that the safety of audiences and logistical uncertainties around cinema operations during a period of heightened national alert were significant factors in the decision. Theatres in several major cities are reportedly operating under stricter security protocols, leading many production houses to reassess their release plans.
This isn’t the first time a Maddock Films project has embraced the digital-first route. The banner, known for hits like Stree, Bala, and Mimi, has previously released titles directly on streaming platforms with considerable success.
With a now highly anticipated premiere on May 16, Bhool Chuk Maaf is expected to draw strong viewership on Prime Video. Fans can look forward to a unique blend of charm, comedy, and emotional storytelling, all from the safety and comfort of home.
