Prime Video has announced that ‘The Love Hypothesis’, based on the bestselling novel by author Ali Hazelwood, will premiere globally on September 23. The streaming platform also released the first-look images from the highly anticipated romantic comedy adaptation, giving fans an early glimpse of the lead characters brought to life on screen.
The film stars Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith and Tom Bateman as Adam Carlsen, the central characters from Hazelwood’s widely popular novel that became a global sensation among romance readers. The adaptation is expected to be one of Prime Video’s major young-adult releases of the year, The Prime Video said in a press release.
Based on the New York Times bestselling book, ‘The Love Hypothesis’ follows Olive, a talented Ph.D. candidate focused on building her academic career. In an impulsive attempt to convince her best friend that she has moved on from a former crush, Olive kisses the intimidating and highly respected professor Adam Carlsen. What starts as a spontaneous act soon evolves into a carefully constructed fake relationship, complete with rules, boundaries and a mutually beneficial arrangement.
As the relationship progresses, the distinction between pretense and reality begins to blur, forcing Olive to confront emotions she never expected and challenging her long-held beliefs about love and vulnerability.
The film is directed by Claire Scanlon and written by Sarah Rothschild. Elizabeth Cantillon serves as producer under The Cantillon Company banner, with MRC presenting the project. Alongside Reinhart and Bateman, the cast includes Rachel Marsh, Nicholas Duvernay, Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan.
Prime Video has also confirmed that Reinhart and Bateman will appear at ‘Obsessed Fest’, the streamer’s inaugural fan-focused event taking place on June 27 in Los Angeles. The event forms part of Prime Video’s broader ‘Obsession Is In Session’ initiative, which celebrates young-adult storytelling, fandom culture and some of the platform’s most anticipated upcoming titles.
Scheduled to be held at nya Studios, ‘Obsessed Fest’ will feature cast panels, immersive fan experiences, exclusive merchandise and first-look previews from several upcoming Prime Video originals. Alongside ‘The Love Hypothesis’, the event will showcase projects including ‘Every Year After’, ‘Elle’, ‘Off Campus’, ‘Overcompensating’, ‘Your Fault: London’ and ‘Drawn Together’.
The adaptation arrives amid growing demand for book-to-screen romance projects, with ‘The Love Hypothesis’ already generating significant excitement among readers and streaming audiences eager to see one of the genre’s most beloved contemporary romances make its transition to screen.
‘The Love Hypothesis’ will stream exclusively on Prime Video worldwide from September 23.
