Amazon MX Player has brought one of Hindi pulp fiction’s most iconic characters to the screen with the launch of ‘Vimal Khanna’, a survival thriller inspired by the popular literary universe created by celebrated crime writer Surendra Mohan Pathak.
Headlined by Sunny Hinduja, the series is now streaming for free on the platform and aims to tap into both nostalgia-driven audiences and the growing appetite for high-stakes thriller dramas in the OTT space.
According to an Amazon MX Player press release, the series follows Vimal Khanna, a man whose life spirals out of control after he is falsely accused and stripped of his identity. Forced to go underground, the character navigates a dangerous world filled with betrayal, shifting loyalties and hidden agendas while trying to reclaim his life. The platform is positioning the show as a gritty emotional thriller that combines suspense with psychological conflict.
The adaptation marks a significant moment for fans of Surendra Mohan Pathak’s long-running ‘The Vimal Series’, which has enjoyed a cult following among Hindi readers for decades. Long before crime thrillers became a dominant genre in Indian streaming entertainment, Pathak’s novels had already built a reputation for fast-paced storytelling, morally grey characters and grounded suspense. With ‘Vimal Khanna’, Amazon MX Player attempts to recreate that literary atmosphere through a cinematic lens for digital audiences.
A major focus of the series is the central mystery surrounding the protagonist’s identity. The recurring question — “Main kaun hoon?” — becomes the emotional core of the narrative as Vimal struggles not only to prove his innocence but also to hold on to his sense of self while being hunted and manipulated by powerful forces. The makers have blended survival drama with emotional tension, giving the thriller a layered narrative beyond action and chase sequences.
Sunny Hinduja, known for performances in several acclaimed web series and films, steps into the role of Vimal Khanna with an intense and restrained screen presence. The show also stars Isha Talwar and Tara Alisha Berry, whose characters add unpredictability and emotional complexity to the story. The ensemble cast helps sustain the show’s atmosphere of paranoia and uncertainty, where alliances constantly shift and trust becomes difficult.
The platform has also highlighted the accessibility of the series, making it available across the MX Player app, Prime Video, Fire TV, connected TVs, Airtel Xstream and the Amazon shopping app. With survival thrillers continuing to attract strong streaming audiences in India, Amazon MX Player appears to be betting on ‘Vimal Khanna’ as a franchise-ready property capable of building long-term engagement among viewers.
