The trailer of ‘Indian Institute of Zombies (IIZ)’ has been launched, introducing a fresh twist to India’s evolving horror-comedy space. Positioned as the country’s first “zom-com” set within a college campus, the film blends the chaos of student life with a full-blown zombie outbreak, offering a concept that stands out in a genre often driven by familiar tropes.
Directed by Gaganjeet Singh and Alok Dwivedi, the film is produced by Kunj Sanghvi and written by Hussain Dalal and Abbas Dalal, known for their work on films like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Farzi. The cast brings together a mix of established and emerging actors, including Mohan Kapur, Anupriya Goenka, Jesse Lever, Shivani Paliwal, Rose Sardana, Sachin Kavetham, and Tanishq Chaudhary.
Set against the high-pressure environment of campus life, the story takes a darkly comic turn as the institution’s top-performing students begin turning into zombies. What starts as a bizarre outbreak quickly spirals into chaos, disrupting classrooms, hostels, and the rigid academic hierarchy. As the situation worsens, it is the unlikely group of backbenchers who step up to confront the crisis, flipping the usual narrative of academic success on its head.
The trailer hints at a fast-paced narrative that mixes suspense with irreverent humour, backed by a high-energy score and visually stylised sequences. At its core, the film appears to play with the contrast between discipline and disorder, merit and survival, all within a familiar campus setting that takes an unexpected turn.
With ‘Indian Institute of Zombies’, Kuku’s maiden feature, the makers are attempting to carve out a new sub-genre within Hindi cinema by leaning into a concept-driven approach. By combining elements of horror, comedy, and youth culture, the film signals a broader shift toward experimentation in mainstream storytelling.
The film is slated for a nationwide theatrical release on May 15, aiming to tap into audiences looking for something unconventional within the horror-comedy space.
