A major development is underway around one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic titles, as Sanjay Dutt and Aksha Kamboj have acquired the rights to ‘Khal Nayak’ for a new collaboration.
Bringing together Jio Studios, Sanjay Dutt’s Three Dimension Motion Pictures and Aspect Entertainment, the partnership aims to revisit the legacy of the cult classic with a contemporary lens.
The Variety reported that the rights for the 1993 film—originally directed and produced by Subhash Ghai under the Mukta Arts banner—have been officially secured from the original creator. The new venture will see Jio Studios and Jyoti Deshpande take the creative lead in shaping the project, although details around its format are being kept tightly under wraps.
‘Khal Nayak’ remains one of the most defining films of its time, widely remembered for its gripping narrative and Dutt’s portrayal of the anti-hero Ballu. At a time when mainstream Hindi film protagonists rarely explored grey shades, the film stood out for its unconventional storytelling and character depth, helping cement Dutt’s position as a versatile leading man.
With the rights now acquired, the makers are exploring a fresh interpretation of the story. Whether the project takes the shape of a remake, sequel, prequel, or an entirely new narrative is yet to be revealed, but the intent is clear—to retain the essence and nostalgia of the original while introducing it to a new generation of viewers.
Jyoti Deshpande, President of Jio Studios, described ‘Khal Nayak’ as an era-defining film that reshaped mainstream storytelling through its bold narrative and memorable characters. She noted that the collaboration seeks to reintroduce the iconic character to today’s audiences while rekindling the nostalgia it continues to hold for those who experienced it in the 1990s.
For Sanjay Dutt, the project carries a personal connection. He said reviving ‘Khal Nayak’ has long been a cherished ambition, adding that he is grateful to Subhash Ghai and Mukta Arts for entrusting them with the legacy. With Jio Studios presenting the film and Aksha Kamboj joining as a partner, he expressed confidence in creating something meaningful for both longtime fans and newer audiences.
Aksha Kamboj, stepping into film production through Aspect Entertainment, called the collaboration a significant milestone. She highlighted that the venture marks the banner’s first project and reflects its ambition to build a collaborative ecosystem where technology supports storytelling, signalling a more streamlined and forward-looking approach to filmmaking.
Over the years, Jio Studios has established itself as a major force in Indian entertainment, backed by a strong slate of successful and critically acclaimed films. With this latest collaboration, the studio adds another high-profile project to its portfolio—one that carries both legacy value and the potential to reimagine a classic for contemporary cinema.
