Anubhav Sinha’s courtroom drama ‘Assi ‘is set for its digital premiere on ZEE5 (Hindi) on April 17, bringing a hard-hitting narrative on justice, trauma, and societal realities to a wider audience.
According to an IANS report, the film is produced by Benaras Media Works and T-Series Films, and features a powerful ensemble cast including Taapsee Pannu, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Kani Kusruti, Revathy, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Naseeruddin Shah, Supriya Pathak, and Seema Pahwa.
Assi centres on a lawyer, played by Taapsee Pannu, who takes on a rape case, confronting not just the crime but also the systemic apathy that surrounds it. The narrative highlights a stark reality—nearly 80 rape cases being reported in a single day—using this statistic to underline the urgency and scale of the issue.
The story also follows the journey of a survivor and her partner, portrayed by Kani Kusruti and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, as they grapple with trauma, societal judgement, and the complexities of the legal system. Rooted in realism, the film explores the emotional aftermath of sexual violence and the long, often difficult path to justice.
At its core, ‘Assi’ examines the human cost of such crimes, focusing on resilience and the silence that often surrounds these experiences. With its digital release, the film now seeks to engage a broader audience and spark meaningful conversations.
Kaveri Das, Business Head – Hindi ZEE5 and Chief Channel Officer, &TV, said the film is the kind that encourages quiet but necessary reflection, adding that the platform remains committed to stories that leave a lasting impact. Director Anubhav Sinha described the project as a reflection of contemporary realities, while Taapsee Pannu called it one of the most challenging roles of her career, emphasising the importance of telling such stories with honesty and sensitivity.
With its intense subject and strong performances, Assi positions itself as a thought-provoking addition to ZEE5’s content library, aiming to resonate with audiences beyond just entertainment
