Director André Øvredal is set to return to the horror genre with his new film ‘Passenger’, which is scheduled to hit theatres on May 29. Known for his atmospheric and unsettling storytelling, Øvredal’s latest project is already drawing attention, even as details about the plot remain closely guarded.
As per a UNI report, ‘Passenger’ stars Jacob Scipio, Lou Llobell and Melissa Leo. While the makers have chosen not to reveal specifics about the storyline, the film is being positioned as a theatrical horror release, continuing Øvredal’s association with dark and suspense-driven cinema.
The film is being produced by Walter Hamada under his banner 18Hz, along with Gary Dauberman through Coin Operated. Hamada and Dauberman have both been associated with several high-profile genre projects, adding further weight to expectations around ‘Passenger’.
Øvredal was last seen at the helm of ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’, his reinterpretation of the Dracula myth. He is also known for directing ‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’, produced by Guillermo del Toro, which helped establish his reputation for blending mainstream appeal with horror sensibilities, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
At the box office, ‘Passenger’ currently has its release date to itself, though it will arrive between two major studio titles — Disney and Lucasfilm’s ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ on May 22, and ‘Masters of the Universe’ on June 5. Meanwhile, Paramount and Hamada are also gearing up for the release of another horror film, Primate, slated for January 9, which centres on a pet chimp with disastrous consequences.
With ‘Passenger’, Øvredal once again steps into familiar territory, setting the stage for what could be one of the more closely watched horror releases of the summer.
