Actor-producer Sohum Shah has officially announced the long-awaited sequel to the cult classic ‘Tumbbad’. Joining forces with Jayantilal Gada’s Pen Studios, Shah unveiled the news on Thursday with a striking poster that read, ‘Tumbbad 2 – The Journey Begins.’
According to a UNI report, Shah took to Instagram to confirm the collaboration between his banner, Sohum Shah Films, and Pen Studios. In his post, he described the project as a promise to push creative boundaries and deliver a cinematic experience audiences will never forget. “We are excited to announce that Sohum Shah Films joins hands with Pen Studios, led by the esteemed powerhouse Dr. Jayantilal Gada, for the next chapter in the Tumbbad universe. With this collaboration, Tumbbad 2 becomes not just a film but a promise to together push boundaries, celebrate storytelling, and deliver an unforgettable cinematic experience. The journey begins! Tumbbad 2,” he wrote.
The official announcement comes on the heels of the successful 2024 re-release of Tumbbad, which not only eclipsed its original box office run but also surpassed the opening day collections of landmark films such as ‘Sholay’, ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, and ‘Rockstar’. Reflecting on the film’s enduring popularity, Shah said, “Tumbbad has been a special journey and a labour of love for us. The continued love it receives is truly overwhelming and reaffirms the core belief of Sohum Shah Films, that content is king.”
The original ‘Tumbbad’ (2018), starring Shah in the lead role and produced under his banner, was hailed for its eerie yet captivating narrative, combining horror, folklore, and mythology. It told the haunting tale of Vinayak Rao (played by Shah), who, lantern in hand and with his young son beside him, embarked on a treacherous quest driven by greed and obsession. At the heart of the story lay the mythical treasure guarded by Hastar, a sinister deity from local legend.
Directed by Rahi Anil Barve and co-written by Mitesh Shah, Adesh Prasad, Barve, and Anand Gandhi, the film was lauded for its originality, atmosphere, and cinematic craft, making it a rare gem in Indian cinema.
The sequel has reportedly been in the works for several years, with recent developments suggesting that the project is now edging closer to production. Fans of the original can look forward to another chilling yet visually rich journey into the unsettling world of ‘Tumbbad’.
