Filmmaker Hansal Mehta’s much-awaited series ‘Gandhi’ is set to make history at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), becoming the first Indian series to be showcased in the festival’s prestigious Primetime slate.
Based on historian Ramachandra Guha’s celebrated works ‘Gandhi Before India’ and ‘Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World’, the multi-season epic offers an intimate, humanised portrayal of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. The lead role is played by Pratik Gandhi, with Bhamini Oza essaying Kasturba Gandhi. The ensemble cast also features international names including Tom Felton, promising a blend of global and Indian talent.
According to a UNI report, the series captures Gandhi’s formative years with a personal lens, balancing historical depth with emotional resonance. Music maestro A.R. Rahman has scored the series, adding a distinct sonic layer to the storytelling.
Sharing his excitement on X, Hansal Mehta wrote, “An audacious dream, born of belief and perseverance, now steps onto the world stage. Gandhi will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2025 as part of its carefully curated Primetime slate. The first Indian series ever to be featured at TIFF. In its 50th year, this festival becomes the home for a story that is at once deeply personal and profoundly universal. A moment of pride. A moment of memory. A quiet revolution begins.”
Rahman, too, expressed his joy on social media, saying, “Glad to announce the world premiere of Gandhi at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival 2025, the first Indian series to be selected in TIFF’s prestigious Primetime slate!”
The 50th edition of TIFF will run from September 4 to 14 and will see Mehta, Pratik, Felton and other cast members attend the premiere and participate in Q&A sessions.
