Snapchat is stepping up its commitment to user safety by introducing new features to its Family Center, the app’s dedicated hub for parental tools and resources.
These updates aim to enhance location-sharing controls, promote family connectivity, and reinforce privacy for teens on the platform.
With over 350 million users engaging with Snap Map each month, these changes reflect Snapchat’s mission to provide a safe and engaging environment for teens while enabling families to stay informed and connected.
Key Features of the Update
1. Location Sharing Through Family Center
Parents and caregivers can now request their teen’s live location directly via Family Center. Teens can opt to share their location, and parents can reciprocate, ensuring mutual transparency about whereabouts.
2. Enhanced Settings Visibility
Family Center will soon allow parents to view which friends their teen shares their location with on Snap Map. This update encourages informed discussions between families about privacy preferences and safe sharing practices.
3. Travel Notifications
A significant addition, parents will be able to select up to three specific locations, such as home, school, or extracurricular venues, and receive notifications when their teen arrives or departs. This feature offers peace of mind for parents monitoring their teen’s movements throughout the day.
4. Safety Reminders
Snapchat will introduce in-app prompts reminding users to review their location-sharing settings. This includes notifications when adding new friends, encouraging thoughtful consideration about sharing with individuals outside their real-world network.
Snapchat reinforces its commitment to privacy by keeping location-sharing off by default. Only accepted friends can access shared locations, and the platform continues to promote secure sharing practices through regular reminders.
These updates will be gradually rolled out in the coming weeks, further solidifying Snapchat’s position as a safe space for teens to connect with friends and family.
Snapchat’s Family Center now offers an all-encompassing toolkit for fostering safe online interactions while empowering families to make informed decisions about their digital lives.
