The 2024 News18 SheShakti summit paid tribute to exceptional women who have shattered barriers and significantly contributed to India’s transformation.
The event, held in New Delhi, gathered influential women leaders, policymakers, and changemakers, including Hon’ble Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Chief Justice of India Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, and retired Supreme Court Judge Justice Indu Malhotra.
According to press release, among the distinguished speakers were prominent figures such as actress and former MP Kirron Kher, Bollywood star Bhumi Pednekar, renowned singer Usha Uthup, and Nigar Shaji, Project Director for ISRO’s Aditya mission.
Other notable participants included Lakshmi M. Puri (former UN Assistant Secretary-General), Ruchira Kamboj (former Permanent Representative to the UN), Suman Nalwa (DCP & PRO Delhi Police), Paralympics Gold Medalist Avani Lekhara, and actress Shefali Shah.
In her keynote address, Droupadi Murmu, Hon’ble President of India, emphasized the significance of women’s empowerment, stating, “Women are, in fact, the true manifestation of power. The real strength of our nation lies in the empowerment of women.” She highlighted the resilience and courage exhibited by women in overcoming challenges.
Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud opened his remarks by addressing the pressing issues women face today, linking them to broader societal concerns such as equal opportunities and dignity. He pointed out, “While there are sufficient legal provisions to protect women, stringent laws alone do not create a just society. We must change our mindset.”
Jagdeep Dhankhar also delivered a powerful speech, advocating for the evolution of mechanisms supporting women’s rights. He challenged the notion of women as the “weaker sex” and underscored the need for greater female representation in policymaking. “I happened to be the Rajya Sabha chairman when the reservation for women in the Lok Sabha was passed. This will enable more women to participate in governance and bring their invaluable experiences to the table,” he asserted.
The summit concluded with a captivating performance by Usha Uthup, leaving the audience inspired. Avinash Kaul, CEO of Network18, remarked, “News18 SheShakti 2024 is our tribute to women who have transformed their dreams into reality. This year, we aimed to highlight women’s vital roles in shaping India’s global narrative.”
Puneet Singhvi, CEO of Digital & President of Corporate Strategy at Network18, added, “By featuring extraordinary women leaders from various sectors, we celebrate their achievements while showcasing how diverse perspectives fuel innovation and progress.”
Conclusion
The News18 SheShakti 2024 summit served as a powerful tribute to women’s leadership, celebrating their cultural and economic contributions and underscoring the necessity of gender diversity and inclusion in building a stronger, more resilient India.
