Disney has taken a significant step to strengthen its technology leadership by appointing Adam Smith, a long-time YouTube executive, as the new Chief Product and Technology Officer for Disney Entertainment and ESPN. Smith will oversee the development and deployment of technology across Disney’s vast entertainment portfolio, including its sports network, ESPN.
Smith will lead a global team of technologists, which includes engineers, product managers, designers, data scientists, and technical operations teams. His role will involve shaping Disney’s digital infrastructure to enhance its entertainment and sports offerings.
Smith, who spent nearly 21 years at Google and YouTube, announced his departure from the tech giant in a heartfelt post on LinkedIn. Reflecting on his career, he expressed gratitude for the opportunities and relationships that defined his journey. He gave special thanks to former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki for guiding him and helping him evolve into a product manager.
In his post on LinkedIn, Smith shared his excitement about his new role at Disney, expressing his long-standing admiration for the company. “I grew up on a steady diet of Mickey, Donald, and all the joy of Disney animation,” Smith wrote. He also conveyed his eagerness to work with the Disney team to continue delivering exceptional experiences to fans around the globe.
Smith’s appointment, effective September 3, 2024, highlights Disney’s commitment to advancing its technological capabilities in the entertainment and sports industries. Smith will report to Disney Entertainment co-chairs Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, as well as ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro.
This move underscores Disney’s strategic focus on innovation as the company continues to navigate the evolving digital landscape and expand its reach in entertainment and sports.
